Welcome to Palma Palace

Situated 65km (40 miles) South of Lisbon, in an area long thought of as Portugal’s rough diamond, Palma Palace is central to the small, old village of Palma and our large agricultural estate.

Once the heart of the historic County of Palma, “Palma Palace” or “Palácio Velho de Palma”, is steeped in history.

In the 12th century, it was the site of a chapel to the Holy Order of Santiago – now our main dining hall – and three centuries later, it was the residence of Dom Pedro de Mascarenhas, 1st Count of Palma, viceroy of Portuguese India and patron of St. Francis Xavier. It is believed that, prior to his travels to the Far East with Dom Pedro, St. Francis Xavier conducted mass in this chapel.

The Palace is located in a region of unspoilt natural beauty. With easy access to the magical Sado River sanctuary and its estuary that is home to a variety of waterfowl, including flamingos, as well as resident dolphins and other wildlife. Also nearby is the 70km (44 miles) stretch of pristine beach from Tróia to Sines. All environmentally protected.

In recent years, the area has become a hotspot for tourism, which has led to the development of a few upmarket resorts and luxurious holiday homes scattered throughout the region. However, none of these can provide what Palma Palace offers; our unique combination of rich heritage and abundant private grounds, including plenty of wildlife within a variety of bucolic landscapes, a short distance from Lisbon.

Many thanks.
